Aug. 9, 2004 BELARUSIAN NEWSPAPER PAYS LIBEL DAMAGES, RESUMES PUBLICATION
Authorities lifted the printing ban on "Narodnaya volya" on 6 August after the daily paid 65 million rubles ($30,000) in libel damages to businessman Syarhey Atroshchanka and Yahor Rybakow, a former head of the Belarusian State Television and Radio Company, BelaPAN reported. "Narodnaya volya" reappeared on 6 August following a two-day hiatus. Meanwhile, the Minsk-based weekly Rabochaya salidarnasts is threatened with closure after the Supreme Court ruled earlier this month to outlaw the Belarusian Labor Party, one of the founders of the weekly. Information Minister Uladzimir Rusakevich suspended Rabochaya salidarnasts for three month in June, charging that the weekly violated the media law.
